Every year, nearly one trillion plastic shopping and grocery bags are used globally. The vast majority end up in a landfill. Through the Kids Recycling Challenge, the Wal-Mart Foundation is partnering with elementary school students in 12 states to prevent these bags from ever reaching the landfill.
The Wal-Mart Kids Recycling Challenge is an innovative partnership between Wal-Mart and elementary schools that helps students become responsible stewards of their environment while earning money for their schools at the same time. It is the most successful plastic bag recycling program of its kind.
Recycled plastic grocery and shopping bags are currently being made into new consumer products such as clean new plastic shopping bags, outdoor decking and railing products, park benches, garden and lawn edging, and decorative tiles to name just a few.
The plastic bags do no have to be from Wal-Mart. You can recycle plastic shopping and grocery bags of any color and type except black (black printing on the bags is ok - black bags are not).
Be sure to remove everything from the plastic bags prior to recycling – including register receipts. We can also accomodate newspaper bags and drycleaning bags, as long as they are clean, dry and empty.
Please note that we cannot take produce bags or any bags that have been in direct contact with food because fruits, veggies and other foods tend to contaminate the bags and jam the recycling machines.
Sierra earns $5 every time we fill the Wal-Mart recycle bag container, located in the front office so bring in those plastic bags and help us earn money for our school!
